1st OKINAWA KARATE & KOBUDO NORDIC SEMINAR 2018
Welcome to an Okinawan Karate seminar in the footsteps of great master Chotoku Kyan (1870-1945).
Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate has produced many famous masters of Karate such as Gichin Funakoshi (founder of Shotokan), Chojun Miyagi (founder of Goju-ryu) and Mabuni Kenwa (founder of Shito-ryu), but still little is known about Chotoku Kyan, the founder of Shorin related styles as todays Shorinji-ryu and Shorin-ryu.
Chotoku Kyan was son of Chofu Kyan, who worked as the assistant of the last king of Ryukyu Kingdom, Sho Tai, and begun his studies of Karate with his father Chofu.
Later on he was introduced to Sokon Matsumura (1809-1896) who acted as chief of security and bodyguard of the last three kings in Ryukyu kingdom (Okinawa).
Chotoku Kyan also studied with other famous masters of Okinawa such as Matsumora, Oyadomari, Maeda, Chatan Yara and Tokumine and passed on their kata in its exact form without any change from how he learned it.
Today, the major styles of Chotoku Kyan's teachings are Shorinji-ryu founded by Joen Nakazato (1922-2010), Shorin-ryu by Zenryo Shimabukuro (1908-1969) and Isshin-ryu by Tatsuo Shimabukuro (1908-1975).
